East Meets West: Bringing TCM to NLB's Mid-Autumn Health Talk

There's something fitting about talking health just as the mooncakes start appearing on shelves. This Mid-Autumn season, Han TCM was honoured to be invited by the National Library Board to speak at Chinatown Library's Programme Zone, as part of a talk: Healthy Mid-Autumn Festival — East Meets West.

The session brought together two very different lenses on the same question — how do we celebrate the festival without compromising our health? Cardiologist Dr Paul Lim Chun Yih opened with a heart-focused guide to mooncakes, while our own Physician Lim Yu Lin took the stage to share the TCM perspective: how those managing the "Three Highs" — high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol — can still enjoy mooncakes and tea, just more mindfully.

Physician Lim walked the audience through body constitutions commonly linked to the Three Highs, from Phlegm-Dampness to Liver-Yang Hyperactivity, and matched each with practical, food-based advice — which mooncake fillings to favour, which teas pair well with which constitution, and small dietary swaps that make a real difference over time.

One of the most memorable moments came during the acupressure segment. When Physician Lim introduced simple ear and hand acupressure points known to help support healthy blood pressure, the room didn't just listen — everyone tried it themselves, pressing along in their seats. It was a small, simple gesture, but a good reminder that TCM wellness practices are often more accessible than people expect.

The audience stayed engaged right through to the Q&A, with many questions on managing specific conditions through diet and lifestyle. We even had a few thoughtful "what if I have both high blood pressure and high sugar?" questions — the kind that reflect how seriously our Chinatown community takes their health.

We're grateful to NLB for the invitation, and to everyone who came down, asked questions, and took part. If this talk sparked questions about your own body constitution or how to manage your health this festive season, our physicians are always happy to help — do drop by any of our outlets for a chat.
